Well folks here it is, the first of my 'virtual' releases.

Soundscapes Volume 1

7 tracks / 56 minutes of pretty laid back material some of which dates back to 2007. It is available from my website as a single 80Mb zip download; all files are 192kb mp3 and artwork is included in the zip.

Enjoy[/i]

I've downloaded it. Looking forward to hearing it, and the HAPI drum!

Mmmm... soundscapes...

Aum Dreaming opens with an ethnic bell and subtle electronics, tinted with birdsong and synth-whispers, before a weird-time-signature sequence comes in, and some faded guitar. Slowly other elements are added; percussion, pads, gliss guitar. The effect is great, and at ten minutes the track has space and time to build. It sounds a bit like a 'nineties Fax release. Good opening track, this. Cloudhill opens with arpeggiated guitars and slow synth chords; quite 'seventies in tone. Slowly, more synths come in and the guitar is wah-ified, until an unexpected but very effective folk element comes in. Wasn't expecting that! We're in Gong-Ozric territory for Dreamworker, with a nice gamelan element too. The gliss guitar is great on this track, which has kind of a slower 'Toltec Spring' groove going on. Emerald Green is almost twelve minutes of swirling guitar, echoing synths and electronic effects, underpinned with more gliss, all hustled along by mutating drum machine patterns; a kind of off-kilter electro-jazz thing here, with the sound effects adding to the weirdness. Hapi Drum features Nick's newest musical instrument, the Hapi, on a brief excursion into synthi-ethnicity. Nice slide guitar too. Bongs out, everybody! Serenity begins with great ethni-synth sounds, like a bonkers dream-jungle in China or India, then goes into guitar solo mode, and very nicely too. Ambient grooves underpin this track, which may well be my fave on the album; half Warp, half Zorch, if you get my drift. The album closes with Liquid Lounge, a tabla enriched stroll of a track through nouveau-Canterbury, or maybe Indo-Rock territory. If anybody was in any doubt of Nick's ability to assemble soundscapes of a very high order, this album will remove that doubt. Great for chilling last thing at night, or maybe (I imagine) a smoke. Top music, with my only quibble being that this should be for sale, not free.

It's a free download for a couple of reasons: 1 - to try and stimulate some interest, 2 - I don't want to start burning limited numbers of cd's with all the printer ink / paper / labels / jewel cases that need to be bought, 3 - folks from outside the UK don't have their cd's lost in the post (like one poor dutch fellow who bravely paid me again!).
